J. A. FAY & EGAN Co. LATHE

CINCINNATI, OHIO

#5 VICTOR MODEL - SINGLE END
The J. A. Fay & Egan Co. was formed by the 1893 merger of
Cincinnati-based rivals J. A. Fay & Co., and the Egan Co. It
continued the position of its predecessor companies as one of the
world's largest manufacturers of woodworking machinery. Fay &
Egan fell onto hard times by 1928, and then went bankrupt in 1937.
It was acquired by Walter F. Schott from the Egan family. Schott
sold many assets but continued the woodworking machinery
manufactory. In 1957, a fire destroyed many foundry patterns.
                                                            I bought this lathe on
Ebay from Oregon. The wooden base was modern and not to my
liking, so I had just the head, tail, tool rests, motor drive and motor
shipped to me. I am setting it up on fir timbers that were recovered
from a barn dated 1830. The cast legs are from a Conover Lathe.
From looking at the Fay & Egan catalog, it appears that this lathe
could either be ordered with or without a cast iron bed and legs.
The head is the single end variety, having no faceplate on the left
side.  I have set up this lathe  with a  reduction drive which was
made by the previous owner and is not original. The bearings are in
fine shape, with no play at all. Serial # 32776.

This is a page from a  1914  J.A. Fay and Egan catalog, showing the
#1-7 "Victor" lathes.  The lathe shown at upper right, shows the
single end head.
Here are two pictures of a wood turning lathe manufactured by the J.A.
Faye Co. in about 1850.  The leather belt is connected to an overhead  shaft
run by steam power.
